Vintage 2026 — One of Our Earliest and Most Promising Harvests Yet

Harvest 2026 kicked off earlier than any season in the past two decades. Head Winemaker Matt Patterson-Green shares what made it special and what to expect from the wines.

Across New Zealand, the 2026 vintage has been talked about with excitement — and at Jackson Estate, we have every reason to share that enthusiasm.

Harvest kicked off earlier this year than in the past two decades, running from January through to late March. A single small rain event provided just enough moisture to keep canopies fresh and leaves firm, but beyond that, the season was dry and remarkably consistent. For Marlborough, those are near-ideal conditions — long, even ripening with minimal disease pressure and the kind of steady warmth that lets fruit develop real depth of flavour.

"Our vintage will be remembered as one of the easiest with steadiest momentum across the entire vineyard," said Matt Patterson-Green, Head Winemaker, Jackson Estate.

Fruit Quality

The fruit arriving at the winery has been excellent — clean, vibrant parcels showing strong varietal expression and natural balance. Ferments are progressing steadily with beautifully aromatic profiles and bright, well-integrated acidity. The fruit's consistency has made for smoother processing and more confident decision-making around picking windows and fermentation management.

It's the kind of season where the vineyard does the heavy lifting, and the winemaking team can focus on precision rather than problem-solving.

What to Expect Across the Range

Our wines are already showing great purity and balance, and we have a genuine sense of anticipation as they settle down post-ferment, mature in barrel and then into blending.

We're particularly excited about what this vintage means for our key varietals. Our Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, due to our vine age, shows our trademark lower acidity and greater texture, rather than the punchy acidity the region is known for. The Pinot Noir parcels have come in with excellent colour and concentration — a real sign of quality from the even ripening conditions. Our Chardonnay is looking elegant and well-balanced, and early Rosé pressings are bright and lively.
