The Jackson Estate Story

Pushing the Boundaries of Marlborough Winemaking

At Jackson Estate, we've spent over 30 years quietly getting on with something remarkable - handcrafting wines that express the true character of our Marlborough vineyards with elegance, finesse and longevity. While others follow trends, we follow the land. From our estate-grown Sauvignon Blanc to our obsessively crafted Pinot Noir, every wine we make is a reflection of our pioneering approach - combining advanced winemaking techniques with an old world, hands-on philosophy that has been part of Jackson Estate since the very beginning.

The Story

How we became Jackson Estate

In 1855 Adam Jackson bought his first blocks of land in the heart of the Marlborough region, along with what was to become known as Jacksons road. The infamous gum tree known as the ‘Grey ghost’ was planted shortly after in 1867 on the land now known as our Homestead vineyard.

Fast forward to 1990 and fifth generation Jackson, John Stichbury planted the first vines on the homestead block, with their first wines released in 1991 – Jackson estate wines were born. Proceeding to go from strength to strength, taking out the coveted Sauvignon Blanc trophy at the London International wine competition in 1993.

In 2013 John and Jay Benton bought Jackson Estate with the intention of building on our fantastic boutique wine reputation around the world. In 2016 the Benton’s started building a pinot specific winery and cellar door which opened in 2017. Under the care of the Benton Family we continue to refine and further develop our Pinot Noir program with award winning hand crafted wines that we can share on a world stage.

We now have a 250 tonne winery, compromising of over 52 small batch tanks, and a unique cellar door.

Our Cellar Door

Designed and built by Brian Massey, the art director of the Hobbit trilogy, our winery and Cellar Door was created by ‘collision architecture’. Drawing inspiration from the original 1850’s settlers' huts, the design features a striking contrast with a burgundy-colored winery protruding from the roof. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a modern and elegant tasting room

Reflecting the Jackson Estate ethos of being modern pioneers of the wine industry and a nod to our history; the settlers huts that occupied the region in the past

Hidden from sight we hold exclusive tasting events in our Cave, deep beneath the cellar door. This is where we hold our prized vintage selections – contact the team if you’re interested in getting a group together for an exclusive tasting event.
