Jeff oversees all aspects of the company, ensuring a smooth operation connecting production, planning, strategic direction, and sales, whilst also covering governance and finance. He has a dynamic hands-on approach to sales and marketing. Domestic and International sales growth is an ongoing goal, without compromising product quality and brand strength. Leading an experienced, diversely skilled team, Jeff’s role is to keep the company’s values to the fore as market changes evolve.

Jeff also heads the Benton Family Wine Group, as well as a diverse portfolio of businesses within the Benton Group.

Matt has been with Jackson Estate for over a decade and guides the winemaking for Jackson Estate to help express the true nature of our vineyards and region. And to create interesting, polarising and enjoyable wines.

JOURNEY: Completed a B.Hort Business and B.Hort Tech at Massey University Started as the Production manager then to Lincoln University to complete a Post Grad Dip Viticulture and Oenology. Following this Matt worked at various vineyards and wineries in South Canterbury, Waipara, USA, Marlborough, Germany, Nelson and back to Marlborough. Started at Jackson Estate as the nightshift winemaker for six weeks when JKE offered a full time position Matt was really impressed with what they were doing so stayed.

INTERESTS: Love living in the Marlborough region, fishing, hunting, Mountain biking and hiking. A great place to raise a family and is the heart of New Zealand winemaking.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WINE AND WHY? The Jackson Estate Gum Emperor Reserve Pinot series from 2005 thru 2011. As they showcase how vine-age, vineyard selection and soil type influence Pinot from Marlborough.

 
 
 

 

Matt Duggan

HEAD VITICULTURIST

My aim is to produce the best grapes, and wines, in Marlborough, and the world.

 
 

JOURNEY: During the 2006 harvest, I spent my study break working in the Villa Maria lab. This experience sparked my ambition to become part of the wine industry. Following that vintage, I completed my science degree in Dunedin, before moving north to study Viticulture and Oenology at Lincoln University.

Family, and work opportunities quickly led me to Marlborough where I was named Marlborough’s Young Viticulturist of the year 3 times in my early career.

Most recently, as Technical Viticulturist at Cloudy Bay, I continued to hone my skills. Leading me to an opportunity to join the Jackson Estate team as Head Viticulturist.

INTERESTS: I’m passionate about the Marlborough region and getting out into nature. If I’m not at work or spending time with my family, you’ll find me fishing, diving, or hunting. I’m truly lucky to live in such an amazing place. A work life balance was one of the key reasons for pursuing a career here in Marlborough.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WINE AND WHY?  Stich! In my opinion, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is the most distinctive wine in the world. Aromatically so mind-blowing, it can’t be replicated anywhere.
