Jose Rafael Arango Cocina Semana Colombia 4 1/2 Grapes: This winery represents the view of Stichbury and Jackson families, who have worked the land in the plain of the Wairau River for over 160 years. In addition to developing superb sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and the pinot plant will give much to talk about, especially for its ruby red color, nose of rose petals, black cherries and raspberries, with pleasant earthy notes. The palate is light, elegant and sophisticated.
James Halliday's Wine Companion 2011 James Halliday's Wine Companion 2011 Light colour, though still with a purple hue; spicy, cedary, foresty notes are in the background on the bouquet and palate alike, fine plum fruit to the fore. 167 cases made.

Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to NZ Wines Michael Cooper Very floral, rich and supple, it is sweet fruited with ripe cherry and spice flavours, seasoned with toasty oak, gentle tannins and lovely harmony. Already highly enjoyable , but also worth cellaring 2011+ 4.5 stars
www.winereviewonline.com Mary Ewing-Mulligan MW 20th October 2009 This is an exceedingly well-made Pinot Noir with a fresh, vibrant personality, lots of flavor and lovely delicacy. From the cool 2007 vintage, this wine has high acid, full body and only a minimal amount of tannin, with focused fresh-fruit aromas and flavors of black and red cherry and tart berries along with a bit of spiciness. It’s truly dry and it has smooth texture and a long, vibrant finish with some concentrated fruit character. Kudos to winemaker Mike Patterson! This wine has limited distribution; if you get a chance to try it, do. 90 points.
Otago Daily Times Charmian Smith 17th September 2009 A flagship pinot, this is a charming, silky-textured wine with attractive hints of cherry supported by well-balanced oak and a hint of chocolate on the finish. Delicious. Four stars.
Bay of Plenty Times Yvonne Lorkin September 2009 Classic fruit forward, juicy Marlborough pinot that has delicious cherry and black tea aromas combined with cocoa and spicy plum flavours that add spark to a slippery smooth palate. One to be savoured with roast duck seasoned with star anise.
www.wineorbit.co.nz Sam Kim 9th July 2009 Grapes (clones 114 and UCD5) were grown on their Gum Emperor vineyard on Waihopai Valley Road
(30 cm silt loam over a heavy Waihopai clay/gravel pan). Grapes were destemmed but not crushed and fermented with indigenous yeasts after a 4-day cold soak followed by a warm 6-day ferment (temperatures reaching 33°C), then 12 day post ferment maceration. A beautifully fragrant and youthful wine displaying dark cherry, spice, subtle mushroom and a hint of cedar characters on the nose. The palate is concentrated, but not heavy, with silky texture and beautifully harmonised acidity and gently drying tannins. A stylish and elegant Pinot with the classic subtle power. At its best: now to 2013. Only 167 cases made. 94 points. 5 stars.
NZ Herald Joelle Thompson 19th July 2009 This wine is named after the Gum Emperor moth, also known as the Opodiphthera eucalypti, which lives on the edges of Jackson Estate’s vineyards in Marlborough. And like many fresh pinot noirs, this wine benefits no end from a whiff of air – leave it in a large glass or decant for a couple of hours prior to drinking. Its meaty aromas and cherry flavours taste great with rich mushroom flavours like the sautéed mushrooms on brioche. |
