James Halliday's Wine Companion 2011 James Halliday's Wine Companion 2011 The complex bouquet attests to the partial barrel fermentation of the wine; it has the concentration and drive often missing from Sauvignon Blanc in Australia and other parts of the world; strongly fruit-driven, with exemplary line and length.
96 points; drink to 2013; 13% alc; Screwcap
Cuisine Magazine A divisive wine. Nick Stock compared it to a Pouilly-Fumé. Jim Harré was less convinced, though he enjoyed the smoky sulphides. The guava and green-almond notes, and a smoky minerality, help make it a very atypical Marlborough Sauvignon. 4 stars
www.winecompanion.com.au James Halliday 26th September 2009 While fermentation was in older French oak, the judiciously managed touch of oak on the bouquet largely disappears on the lively and intensely flavoured palate with citrus and tropical contributions. This truly delicious wine has great mouthfeel and line. 95 points.
The Village Voice (New York) Chantal Martineau 24th September 2009 His (Mike Paterson's) most interesting wine is arguably Grey Ghost, the winery's flagship Sauvignon Blanc, which is fermented using indigenous yeast and aged briefly in oak. It's released a year after bottling, and so, at $25 USD a bottle, it's a good value, with a satisfyingly weighty mouthfeel and mineral backbone to balance out the acidity and fruit.
Cambrian News Bev Davies 7th May 2009 If you want to push the boat out for a special occasion, one of the best Sauvignon Blancs I’ve sampled in a long time was Jackson Estate Grey Ghost Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand…Lemons and limes roll off the palate. It’s crisp, fresh, beautiful.
Western Mail Neil Cammies 24th January 2009 The Grey Ghost Sauvignon Blanc is like an amplified version of their fine standard sauvignons. It gave its mineral character in abundance complete with a fine balanced finish.
