Stich Sauvignon Blanc 2008 Accolades

Hunts Post (UK) Robin Fitzgerald
Flavoursome lively citrus-led sauvignon with clean mineral finish - another good seafood match.

New Zealand sauvignon has been one of the huge success stories of the last five years. I have written and tasted many, but fine myself coming back to Jackson time and time again.

Been There Tasted That: A Journal of Living Roger Morris 8th January 2010
This wine has all the herbal notes that Marlborough lovers want, yet it is a couple of notches up the ladder because of its rounder, riper gooseberry flavors. Quite nice. Buy.

Wine Enthusiast Magazine December 2009
A lovely, ripe rendition of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, the 2008 Stich features bold passion fruit and guava shadings, a lushly textured mouthfeel and a long, vibrant finish. It should be consumed now and over the next few months. 91 Points & Editor's Choice.

Loved this wine! Racy, aromatic citrus — tangerine, orange, lime — from start to finish, with light grassy notes that add complexity and depth. Clean, pure finish. Ready to drink

It may sound strange to talk about a “classic” style or character for a wine that is barely a generation old, but New Zealand has quickly become a world leader, arguably the world leader, with Sauvignon Blanc. The best examples taste vibrant and vivacious, with pungent citrus flavors and enticing herbal aromas. They exhibit true dryness, and can leave you (or at least me) salivating. This particular rendition exhibits precisely that classic Kiwi style. It’s superb.

100 Best Wines. Jackson Estate’s standard sauvignon has been sub-titles Stich in honour of John "Stich” Stichbury’s 20th vintage in 2008. The Stichbury and Jackson families are behind this label, with the latter having farmed this parch of the Wairau River dirt for more than a century. This zesty, grassy, white currant and tropical fruit-laden sauvignon is a blend of seven different Marlborough vineyard sites and a good buy.

Great screwcap buy …Jackson Estate’s gorgeous gooseberry and tropical fruit-laden Stich Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough in New Zealand.

New York Examiner Robert Haynes-Peterson 29th September 2009
Served as an aperitif, it is dry and clean with nice acidity. The nose shows orange and lemon zest, white pepper and apricot, while the round mouth feel gives off soft fruits, mild citrus and a nice, long, clean finish.

www.winecompanion.com.au James Halliday 26th September 2009
Here pure sauvignon varietal character is given free reign, although the quality of the grapes from the mature estate-grown vines is obvious; once again, there is a lip-smacking conjunction of fruit flavours without any sweaty or blowsy overtones. 94 points.

Style Gourmet (New York) Elliot Essman 20th September 2009
The Jackson Estate 2008 Stich Sauvignon Blanc, at $22 (USD), is the wine you are most likely to track down. The Stich is the namesake of Managing Director John Stichbury. Light lemon in color with a “great nose” (I quote my notes directly) of melon, peach and honeysuckle. The dry wine has good acidity but other dimensions, with tropical flavors of banana and ripe mango. “Our aim here was to showcase the fruit in a food-friendly wine,” Paterson relates. “We allowed five months lees aging in tank for the sake of palate texture and rounder acidity.” The Stich is a blend of four separate vineyard sites, fined-tuned by Paterson into an excellent package for the price.

Wine Spectator Harvey Steiman August 2009
Bright and vibrant, with green leafy notes around a core of lime and tangerine fruit, finishing with zest. 89 points.

Yorkshire Post (UK) 8th August 2009
A serious notch up in quality from one of the big New Zealand brands, Jackson Estate always has lots of minerally complexity with bright herbaceous fruit.

The Independent Wine Monthly Jane Skilton and Emma Jenkins 25th June 2009
The 2008 Stitch Sauvignon Blanc is delicious, full of gooseberry, red capsicum and nettle flavours with the merest whiff of passionfruit. Silky, ripe and smooth with a streak of crisp citrus acid adding spine. One of the better efforts from the troublesome 2008 vintage.

The Age (Australia) Ralph Kyte-Powell 2nd June 2009
Jackson Estate produces a couple of Marlborough sauvignon blancs. This fruit-dominant version has mouth-watering aromas of guava, tropical fruit salad and fruit junket. The palate has a trace of fruit sweetness, good varietal flavours, zesty acidity and a refreshing finish. An archetypal example of quality NZ sauvignon. 4.5 Stars.

Northern Advocate Graeme Barrow 26th May 2009
Very drinkable wine, herbal and intense, with passionfruit and blackcurrant aromas and flavours, almost dry, with fresh acidity, good balance and concentration. The 2007 vintage of this wine has matured well, which augers well for this one.

Otago Daily Times Charmian Smith 6th May 2009
Named for owner and founder John Stichbury, this is the essence of good Marlborough sauvignon with oodles of ripe passionfruit and tropical fruit, a hint of mineral, and intense flavours with a velvety texture and a lovely long, crisp, dry finish. Four and a half stars.

Bob Campbell MW May 2009
Grassy simple Sauvignon Blanc with gooseberry and cut grass flavours. Nicely balanced with moderate concentration. Some attractive passion fruit notes with appealing pungency. A very good example from the vintage.

NZ Herald Jo Burzynska 19th April 2009
Jackson Estate has added the nickname of the winery's founder and owner, John "Stich" Stichbury to its sauvignon. Jackson's latest again delivers a powerful but elegant palate of passionfruit, red capsicum and oregano over citrus and stone.

NZ Herald Joelle Thompson 5th April 2009
Every mouthful of this wine lingers. It’s named after winery co-owner John Stitchbury, ‘Stitch Sauvignon Blanc’ and is soft, fruity and will taste good with the tuna tataki

www.wineorbit.co.nz Sam Kim Issue 4 April 2009
The 2008 vintage celebrates 20 years of grape growing at Jackson Estate and the wine is dedicated to owner and founder John “Stich” Stichbury. This label has been a benchmark Sauvignon since the early days and continues to deliver excellent quality year after year. The bouquet is nicely lifted and aromatic displaying lime zest, capsicum and a hint of passionfruit characters. It’s bursting with ripe fruit flavours with mouthwatering acidity providing excellent vibrancy and length to this gorgeous wine. Classically Marlborough and very tasty. At its best: now to 2011. 4.5 Stars.

Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to NZ Wines Michael Cooper 2009
5 Stars. Weighty and sweet fruited, with ripe tropical fruit flavours showing excellent intensity. It is dry and crisp with great texture and a slightly minerally long finish.

The Southland Times Warren Barton March 2009
One of the best examples yet of this generous multi-vineyard blend that fills the mouth with lasting sweet-fruit flavour and freshness.

Forbes.com Magazine Eric Arnold 29th January 2009
In 2001, a year after a well-known Australian winery switched to screw cap, Jackson Estate owner John Stitchbury held a meeting on the subject with other local winemakers around his kitchen table. That's widely know to be the moment that the screw-cap movement took off in New Zealand and began spreading throughout the wine industry. Today, more than 90% of New Zealand's wines are bottled with screw caps. Jackson Estate is a typical intensely aromatic Marlborough sauvignon blanc, with grass and tropical fruit aromas and flavors.
