The Independent Wine Monthly (N.Z.) Jane Skilton & Emma Jenkins August 2008 The nose on the 2006 Jackson Estate Shelter Belt Chardonnay is quite distinctive, with a floral yet mealy quality. Winemaker Mike Paterson has invested plenty of winemaking time and effort into what is a modestly priced wine and it shows. The nose has lovely peach, banana skin and a touch of brown biscuit, a good honest palate, medium bodied, plenty of ripe fruit, the palate has nice grapefruit and white peach with a touch of spicy oak on the finish. Very nicely made wine with lots of varietal character that will please chardonnay lovers and more complexity and interest than you would always expect for the price. An excellent effort.
Wine Advocate (USA) Neal Martin Issue #176 April 2008 The 2006 Shelter Belt Chardonnay is barrel fermented and spends seven months in barrel, left on the lees for six months before light filtration. A complex flinty nose with a touch of beeswax, this Chardonnay has very well-integrated oak with subtle tropical fruits such as mango and pineapple leading towards a crisp off-dry finish (3 grams per liter residual sugar.) 90 Points.
Otago Daily Times Charmian Smith 5th December 2007 I loved this wine with its overtones of fresh stone fruit, and a nutty textural finish. It was crisp and fresh like a spring morning the first day. The following day the oak became more obvious. Wine of the week.
Next Magazine John Hawkesby November 2007 A single vineyard wine with a lovely balance, light toasty oak and mellow stone-fruit flavours.
Wine Orbit Sam Kim November 2007 A single vineyard wine from their Homestead vineyard (named after a large shelterbelt of trees on their property separating two estate vineyards) with two clones (Mendoza and B95). A deluxe treatment of hand-sorted bunches: they were pressed, short-settled then fermented in French oak barriques (25% new, medium-toasted Allier and Vosges) with indigenous yeasts. Spontaneous malolactic conversion in late spring, then stayed in barrels until late February 2007. The wine is opulent displaying pineapples, stone fruit and creamy notes on the nose. It has luscious mouthfeel with an attractively round texture and nicely balanced acidity. It’s generous and full-bodied but with excellent poise and structure, ensuring the wine’s gentle development over the next few years. 93. At its best: now to 2010
NZ Herald Jo Burzynska 5th October 2007 A chic single vineyard chardonnay sourced from Jackson Estate's Homestead block. Here, rich apricot fruit and toasty cashew nut butter notes from well-judged time in barrel are balanced by a crisp grapefruit acidy. A great wine that offers great value.
www.truewines.co.nz Keith Stewart 31st August 2007 Look - Light gold straw. Smell -
Warmly aromatic wine with a mealy tone and some vaguely fig-like fruit. Taste - Soft, chewy impact with a sweet feel and some mealy flavours. Mid palate is soft and easy paced, but with considerable weight and good length. Hints of marmalade at the finish. Notable.
