The Penguin Good Australia Wine Guide Nick Stock 2009 This quality focused grower’s pinot shows solid ripeness and aromatic density, dark cherry fruits and some dark cherry spices. The palate is supple and swirling, has meaty toasty complexity, finishing vibrant and fresh. Nice balance between fruit quality and switched on winemaking. 92 points.
Decanter World Wine Awards 2008 Abundant black fruits, dark plum and cherry notes. Mouthfilling, plush and indulgent. Subtle voilets. Spice. Needs some time. Commended.
Daily Mail (UK) Matthew Dukes 19th April 2008 It is as silky and captivating as any top pinot on the planet. A real treat - make sure you savour this with your best friends.
Wine Advocate (USA) Neal Martin Issue #176 April 2008 The sophisticated 2006 Vintage Widow Pinot Noir is sourced from 8-year-old vines planted on unirrigated soils. A complex nose of cherry, jasmine and mulberry is a little subdued but will surely come to life with more aeration, whilst the medium-bodied palate had a lovely plush texture with notes of red cherry and plum, slightly savory on the finish. An excellent Marlborough Pinot Noir. 91 points.
Australian Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine Bob Campbell MW February March 2008 Strong strawberry and blackcurrant flavours offer appeal in this intense and fruity wine. Lengthy with a good influence of classy oak. 90 points ****
Urbis Landscapes Joelle Thompson February 2008 Succulent, juicy, medium bodied South Island pinot noir with all the bells and whistles to impress your palate.
Irish Examiner (Ireland) Blake Creedon 26th January 2008 Along with the beautiful whites highlighted last week this beauty exhibits the twin virtues of crispness and generous fruit.
Wine Orbit Sam Kim November 2007 The wine is so-named in recognition of their winemakers spending far too much time away from their families during the vintage, nursing this fickle variety in the cellar. They should be proud as they have produced a delicious wine showing a lovely, perfumed nose exhibiting ripe, black cherries and a hint of well-integrated oak. It’s concentrated on the palate showing succulent fruit, a fine texture and balanced acidity leading to a nicely dry finish. At first the wine appeared youthful and fresh without layered complexity, but it evolved very pleasingly in the glass showing hints of savoury and game characters. 91. At it best: now to 2010
National Business Review (New Zealand) Nick Bryant September 2007 This is the smartest of the relatively few 2006 pinots I’ve tried, with many of the heavyweights still some way off being released. The colour is bright mid garnet; lovely ripe plum, bottled cherry and sweet spice on the nose. The most endearing feature on the palate – beyond the elegant plum, cassis and cherry fruit that rolls beautifully across the tongue – is its mid-weight, supple and velvety texture. In a word, it’s elegant. It will hold well but is probably best consumed in the next couple of years, especially if you favour primary fruit prior to the onset of aged characters.
Hawke's Bay Today Yvonne Lorkin 8th September 2007 Named after the long suffering “significant others” left to run the home during that manic march to may period each year when the grapes are
harvested and processed, this wine has deep Damson plum and dark chocolate characters with lifted lavender and lilac, black tea and cherries topping it all off. Slippery and sultry on the finish, it’s a pinot that definitely pleases, particularly with slow-cooked poisson stuffed with nuts, herbs And orange zest. 4 stars.
The Independent Wine Monthly Jane Skilton MW and Emma Jenkins August 2007 The 2006 Jackson Estate Vintage Widow Pinot Noir has a lovely bright mid ruby colour whilst the nose offers cranberry, wild raspberry and red plum aromas with just a touch of forest floor starting to emerge. The wine is still very much in its infancy; the vivid fruit flavours are still quite muted and tight. But it is a great relief to see oak sensitively handled and the long finish suggests this is a wine that will develop well. |
