Gum Emperor Pinot Noir 2005 Accolades

Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to NZ Wines Michael Cooper 2009
5 Stars. A powerful yet graceful wine, it is boldly coloured, rich and smooth with beautifully concentrated ripe cherry plum and spice flavours, and gentle tannins.

The Gum Emperor Pinot Noir was more defined in style and dimension, giving off floral aromas and good acidity in the mouth.

What a treat. Where to start! I could just say powerful, complex and impressive, and leave it at that but then I would not get to use words like, concentrated, silky, rich, savoury, black fruits, musky, sweaty armpit, animal and Christmas pudding. What a treat and if you can find a bottle of this limited release wine then you can consider yourself lucky.

Dense, deep wine with masses of plum and dark cherry flavours supported by quite strong oak adding a chocolate-like richness. Drying and spicy but with plenty of berry flavours and a fleshy texture. 91 points ****

A top newcomer from Marlborough winery Jackson Estate. Amazing, fantastic, soft, hugely drinkable and obviously made from low-yielding vines. This is a seamlessly smooth pinot noir.

Look - Deep, purple edged red. Smell - Intense cassis, with gravelly, bird's nest / earthy overtones. Expressive and promising. Taste - Gravelly yet smooth, with an intense, flavoursome front featuring cocao, tobacco, spice and plum flavours in impressive harmony. Fine tannins pull everything together and focus the outragous tastyness of the wine. The back palate is dry, savoury and tenacous. Fine, strong acid balance suggests that this will reward further cellering handsomely.

Winemakers at Jackson Estate speak highly of the 2005 vintage and with this wine they provide a further opportunity to acknowledge their love of Marlborough pinot noir. It has a nicely lifted aroma of black cherry, a silky mouth feel that is perfect for carrying the fullish flavours of plum and spice across the palate and a lengthy finish. The true strength of the wine comes from its structure and balance. Where others appear lean and stingy, this is well balanced and generous. At $60 it sits in the reasonably pricey bracket but compared with many others it represents excellent value.

Marlborough winery Jackson Estate doesn’t have a particularly high profile as a pinot noir producer but with this wine it has emphatically announced its emergence as one of the region’s exemplars of the style. It’s a beautifully complete, seamless wine: dense, weighty and meaty, quite masculine in style yet still refined and silk textured.

This could be a classic in the making. We will have to wait 10 vintages or so to be sure but the first release is stunning. The wine is named after the Gum Emperor moth living in the gum tree at their homestead vineyard. The grapes for this wine were sourced from a single vineyard, their best Pinot Noir spot, in the Wairau Valley. The wine exhibits a youthful medium-deep red/purple colour with dark cherries, floral notes and a gentle spicy oak. The sweetness of ripe fruit hits the front palate but it’s not overripe. Then the silky, almost creamy, texture takes over leading to a lingering finish with firm but fine tannins. This youthful palate is beautifully balanced and proportioned. Just gorgeous. A brilliant effort from Geoff Woollcombe, the viticulturist, Mike Paterson, the winemaker, and the team at Jackson Estate. At its best: now to 2010. Only 125 cases were made. 5 stars 95 points.
